Running Companion: Air Runner

Summary

Air Runner is a speculative concept from 2014 that reimagines the future of jogging. Inspired by aerial drones, the project envisions a smart flying companion that turns your daily run into a gamified, interactive, and data-rich experience.
As an industrial design intern, I was part of the core team and contributed to app concept development and overall design delivery.

In 2024 summer, we explored a futuristic vision to transform how we run

In this concept, runners are accompanied by a lightweight drone that tracks performance, lights the path, and introduces playful challenges. Developed by a small team of designers and engineers, the idea started with a curiosity for consumer drones and evolved into a vision of how tech could elevate fitness experiences.

Gamified Running with Smart Projection

Equipped with a built-in projector, Air Runner casts interactive visuals onto the running path, games, pace targets, or even a guided light trail. The drone tracks motion via its onboard camera, enabling gesture-based controls like:

  • Bumping fists: Start recording
  • Lifting elbows: Pause or stop

It supports both solo and group runners, and adds safety during nighttime jogs.

App Integration for Social & Personal Growth

A companion mobile app allows users to:

 

  • Track stats and personal achievements
  • Share scores and routes with friends
  • Access and download new games or training modes

 

This scalability turns Air Runner into more than a gadget - it becomes a platform for fitness, fun, and community.

Features of the Air Runner

  • Projector, light, and camera
  • 8 Motors buffered by noise-absorbing horizontal and vertical blades
  • Heavy-duty wristband (adaptable to upper arm as well) with a touch slider for landing and magnetic docking
  • Equipped with GPS, Bluetooth, and NFC
  • Comes with gesture and voice control for game and operation features
  • App (digital extension for community connection and individual routes)

 

Eight motors steer Air Runner steadily and robustly and avoid sudden crashes due to gusts of wind. While original drones cause pretty some noise, the horizontal and vertical blades of Air Runner absorb sounds as well as shield the wings against external impacts.
